Why do Caregivers love these DVDs?
Because of the nature of memory diseases, it is hard for Alzheimer's sufferers to watch television and movies. It is difficult and frustrating to follow the plot and remember the characters of movies, situation comedies and dramas. Most television programs are also geared these days to a younger audience and have a lot of fast paced, jarring pictures with loud music that can be irritating to older viewers.
Our videos are an alternative to regular television programs, and each video has no story or characters. They are filled with scenes of nature, including Saguaro National Monument, Yellowstone National Park, wetlands in Florida, the Blue Ridge Mountains and tropical fish in the Bahamas, all set to natural sound and soft pleasant music. The videos show deer, buffalo, colorful fish, wild birds and other animals in these pastoral settings, with many scenes of mountains, creeks, waterfalls, geysers, lakes, wild flowers, and sunsets.
The videos are used in in-home care settings, nursing homes, and residential group homes. Nursing homes are finding them very useful in the recreation areas of their Special Care Units and Alzheimer's Units, and spouses and adult children are using the tape in their homes to care for their loved ones.
Relief for the "36 Hour Day"

New Video Aims at Alzheimer's

A Wyoming company has released a video with splendid nature scenes to calm Alzheimer's patients and relieve their caregivers from a taxing job.
Lake Solitude Media recently produced "Beautiful Wyoming" with the sights and sounds of Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons, and the Big Horn Mountains.
Greg Irwin said he worked with Alzheimer's caregivers to produce a soothing video that's easy for patients to follow. "They can just enjoy the pictures and the music," he said.
Arlene Osborn, who has experience working with people with Alzheimer's, said the scenic video is ideal for Alzheimer's patients who can't concentrate on shows with characters and dialogue.
"It's really difficult for people with Alzheimer's," she said. "So people don't have to keep up with the dialogue. There's no narration. The only sound is either music or natural sound."
She said she has loaned the video to families of Alzheimer's patients in Casper and a nursing home for both patients and caregivers to enjoy.
"It gave the person with Alzheimer's something to watch," she said, "and it gave the person who's caring for them a respite. We're always kind of on the lookout for things people can use to give themselves some respite."
Irwin said the video can be used to jog Wyoming patients' memories of places they have visited. "These are things that people have done and remember," he said. "They may remember things from a long time ago. These are things from people's pasts."
Osborn said the video provides an activity that Alzheimer's patients and their families can do together. "It's a real nice reminiscence tool, as well, if a family can sit down together and watch it," she said.
Cheryl Wilson, a unit coordinator at a nursing home in Casper, said she hadn't expected the video to occupy her Alzheimer's patients for its entire 30 minutes. "They really enjoyed it," she said. "It had a calming effect. It surprised me that they would sit and watch it. Their attention span isn't very good."
Her patients haven't responded as well to movies she's shown in the past, like "Mary Poppins," she said. "They like the scenery movies better."

- My name is Greg Irwin, and I started producing this series of DVDs and videos for persons with Alzheimer's over ten years ago. It all started for me when the father of a close friend of mine was exhibiting the signs of Alzheimer's disease, and we began to search for ways to ease the burdens of caregiving and to provide an alternative to regular TV shows. My friend's father was a veteran and scenes on TV of war and conflict were very agitating. He also had a hard time with emotional programs like soap operas and talk shows.
- I have been a video producer for more than twenty years, and have been fortunate to live in one of the most scenic parts of the United States. We began to experiment with putting together videos that consisted of beautiful scenes of nature, wildlife and flowers, and set them to calming and relaxing music. My friend's father responded quite well to these videos. Later I was approached by other caregivers, and showed the videos to other caregivers.
